The Masters is the most followed and the first of the four yearly professional golf tournaments. It takes place at the Augusta National Golf Club in the first week of April. The Masters tournament was started by Bobby Jones and Clifford Richards and the first one took place in 1934.
Competitors play in groups of three for the first 36 holes on the first two days. After 36 holes have been played by all players, players are eliminated to reduce the field. To "make the cut", players must be either within 44 places of the lead (ties counting) or within 10 strokes of the leader's score.
The Golf Masters has specific traditions such as the winner receiving a green jacket which is passed on when the next champion arrives. The green jacket is worn by members of the exclusive, private Augusta golf club and all champions become instant members. This emphasizes the sense of honour to win.
The Masters are broadcasted across the US but also in Canada and in the UK. However, tickets can be purchased to stand on the golf course and watch the professional golfers play through the intense course.
